If you’re looking for one of the best places to go running near Walnut Creek, it’s hard to beat the Lafayette Reservoir Rim Trail.
Whether you’re training for your first 5K, preparing for a HYROX race, or simply looking for a scenic place to get outside and move, the Rim Trail has something to offer. It’s close to home, easy to navigate, and offers just enough challenge to leave you feeling accomplished without requiring an all-day adventure.
I’ve run this trail dozens of times over the years, and it remains one of my favorite local routes.
A Hidden Gem Just Minutes from Walnut Creek
When I first moved to California many years ago, some friends invited me to run the Lafayette Reservoir Rim Trail.
At the time, I barely knew the area. I remember cresting one of the hills, looking out across the water, and thinking:
“How is something this beautiful only ten minutes from Walnut Creek?”
Years later, I still have the same thought every time I run it.
One of the best parts about living in Walnut Creek is having access to incredible outdoor recreation without needing to drive hours into the mountains. Within minutes, you can trade busy streets for towering trees, fresh air, and miles of well-maintained dirt trails.
What Makes the Lafayette Reservoir Rim Trail So Popular?
The full Rim Trail loops approximately 4.9 miles around the reservoir.
Unlike many hiking trails, the path is well maintained and easy to follow, making it approachable for runners of many different experience levels.
Along the way you’ll experience:
- Rolling dirt trails
- Several challenging but manageable climbs
- Long runnable descents
- Beautiful reservoir views
- A peaceful atmosphere that makes it easy to forget you’re just outside Walnut Creek
While there are certainly hills, they aren’t relentless. The trail naturally alternates between climbing and flatter runnable sections, making it enjoyable rather than intimidating.

A Great Training Tool for HYROX Athletes
If you’re training for an upcoming HYROX race, the Lafayette Reservoir Rim Trail is also an excellent place to build fitness.
A HYROX race includes 8 kilometers (just under 5 miles) of running, broken into eight separate 1-kilometer segments between workout stations.
While the race itself is relatively flat, the Rim Trail’s rolling hills create similar heart-rate spikes to what many athletes experience after demanding stations like:
- Sled Push
- Burpee Broad Jumps
- Rowing
- Farmers Carry
It’s not a perfect simulation—and it isn’t meant to be—but it provides an excellent opportunity to build endurance while enjoying one of the most scenic runs in the East Bay.
Tips for Your First Run
If it’s your first time visiting the Rim Trail, here are a few recommendations:
- Wear comfortable running shoes. Trail shoes are great if you have them, but road shoes generally work just fine in dry conditions.
- Bring water, especially during warmer months.
- Expect a few hills. Walking briefly on the steepest sections is completely normal.
- Take time to enjoy the views.

This Sunday’s run will meet at the main Lafayette Reservoir parking lot in front of the water.
