HYROX vs CrossFit: Which Will Keep You Coming Back?

, ,

Before I found CrossFit in 2006, I enjoyed training for and competing in triathlons. Go back a little further, and you’d find 14-year-old me starting out with traditional bodybuilding exercises. That was how I trained for the next seven or eight years.

I’ve always liked working toward something. What hooked me on CrossFit was how many somethings there were: getting stronger, building endurance, learning a new skill, then coming back to improve it. Twenty years later, there are still things I want to get better at.

More recently, I’ve enjoyed HYROX training as another way to make my fitness as well rounded as possible—which, ironically, is what CrossFit is all about.

So if you’re in Walnut Creek wondering whether HYROX or CrossFit would be a better fit, I’d start with a different question:

What would keep you coming back?

HYROX vs CrossFit: What’s the difference?

A HYROX race combines running with workout stations in a set format. CrossFit training varies from day to day and can include strength work, conditioning, and skills such as gymnastics and Olympic lifting.

That describes what you do. The more useful difference, especially if you’ve struggled to stay consistent with your workouts, may be what gives you a reason to show up again.

If a finish line motivates you, try HYROX

Some people train best when there’s a date on the calendar. A HYROX race gives you an event to prepare for and a chance to put your training to the test.

You can work on your running, get more comfortable with the stations, and see how your preparation comes together. If a clear goal helps you get out the door on days when motivation is low, HYROX might be the place to start.

You don’t need to sign up for a race before trying a class, though. You can come in, learn the movements, and see whether you enjoy the training itself.

If learning new skills motivates you, try CrossFit

CrossFit offers a different kind of long-term pull. Maybe you want to work toward your first pull-up. Maybe a lift that once felt awkward starts to click. Maybe you realize you can handle a workout that would have intimidated you a few months ago.

There are many places to make progress: strength, endurance, gymnastics, Olympic lifting, and more. If practicing a skill and noticing small improvements keeps you interested, CrossFit might be a great fit.

Do you have to choose one?

No. I enjoy both, and plenty of people find that their interests change over time. You might spend a season training toward a HYROX event and then get excited about improving a CrossFit skill. You might love CrossFit and discover that a race gives your conditioning a new focus.

At CrossFit Sweat Shop, we offer both CrossFit classes and HYROX training. You can find what motivates you right now without deciding what you’ll do forever.

Am I fit enough to start?

You don’t need to reach a certain fitness level before trying either class. That’s what our coaches are here for: to meet you where you are and help adjust the workout to your current ability.

If you’re already working out on your own but finding it hard to stay consistent, consider what you’d look forward to next: an event to train for, a skill to keep improving, or a little of both?

The best way to find out is to experience a class. Book a free CrossFit or HYROX trial at CrossFit Sweat Shop in Walnut Creek, and we’ll help you find a starting point.
