How Star Wars Was Saved in the Edit

As most of you know by now, I am a bit of a Star Wars fan, as are a lot of people in the world! I figured with the release of the most recent film this would be a good opportunity to share something I have come across recently. The Star Wars movies are some of, if not the, most successful movies of all time. The impact Star Wars has had on pop culture is immeasurable, commanding a fan base worldwide. It also changed the movie industry with its blend of cutting edge (at the time) special effects and dramatic storyline, that kept viewers captivated and on the edge of their seat. What many people don’t know is that the original cut of Star Wars was far from perfect, and that it could be argued that Star Wars was saved in the editing process.

The editors of a movie rarely receive any praise and I am sure most of you cannot name your favorite movie editor off the top of your head. Despite flying under the radar, they play a vital role in the creation of the final cut of any film. While listening to a podcast recently, I heard about a video showing how Star Wars was saved in the editing process. Without going into too much detail I was surprised with how much was changed from the rough cut to the final cut. If you have a deep appreciation for Star Wars like me, or just want to learn about something that has had a big impact on society, go ahead and give this video a watch. I am always happy to have a Star Wars debate, unless its about Jar Jar Binks (I’m talking to you Vic!!).
