Paleo in a nutshell

Here is a great video that sums up the whole Paleo nutrition thing.  We may not think about a lot of this stuff, but when it’s all put together in the video, it’s hard to deny the obvious.  Thanks to the guys at CrossFit San Ramon for posting this.

I am not normally a big commenter but figured maybe this might help someone considering trying Paleo. Keep in mind I have been trying this since about last February. Purist really won’t like this post i imagine and i am sorry for that, but those who want to be healthier and aren’t willing to go to the full extremes this might help. I say extreme more referring to the Zone diet as it was too intimidating for me to really want to do it.

1st, I am not even close to being perfect at maintaining a properly balanced Paleo diet/lifestyle, whatever you want to call it. By no means am I trying to teach this or push this on anyone either, crap, I sell stuff to make beer and wine and that can’t be very “Paleo”.

2nd, I hate the word “diet” as it has so many negative connotations, and I feel like if that is how you think of it, it will fail. Consider it more a lifestyle that you are trying to achieve.

After trying crossfit for a few weeks Nabil started giving tips on proper nutrition. I thought my wife and I ate pretty healthy but just the small things like logging what we ate helped a ton to understand what wasn’t as good as we thought. I tried my best to curb my eating habits pretty much eliminating breads, sugars, pastas, rice, etc… with the goal of loosing 25 lb. Shockingly it worked, and fast, of course exercising for the first time in 6 years on a regular basis helped too. Now I allow those things back into things 1 or 2 times a week and really less than that as I found I don’t miss them. Sometimes when out with friends its the only choice and you have to eat, no big deal if it’s once in a while.

The first 2 months. I won’t lie, it’s a pain to get used to. I ate fast food convenience for so long that it took at least two months to get used to shopping more frequently. Also, i tend to work late and if you don’t prepare you are hosed, trying to shop and cook at 10 at night is way too late.

After that first 2 months things started getting easier. We shop about every 2-3 days noticing we really are only buying things on the perimeter of the grocery store (fresh in other words). Once we figured out what we liked it really is more a replenishment purchasing than anything else and gets fast and easy. Also, it gets easier to kind of plan your eating around your day as you get used to it, it just gets easier and easier.

Anyway, sorry for the long comment, I hope this helps anyone else thinking of changing their eating habits.
    Chris
