Don’t be another stat!
This graph was taken from Google Trends. It shows the internet search popularity of CrossFit, Bally Fitness, Gold’s Gym, and 24 Hour Fitness. Notice the huge spike each New Year for all big commercial gyms. CrossFit’s growth in popularity has been steady with the occasional spike due to large newspaper or magazine publications. However, it appears CrossFit will soon overshadow even 24 Hour Fitness in popularity.
One of the key differences with CrossFit is that it is a program and supportive community that seeks to improve the health, fitness, and well-being of it’s members, not a membership driven gym with several hundred or even a few thousand members which relies on an extremely high turnover rate for it’s success. CrossFit is a process of continual learning and refinement, both in regards to the exercises, as well as nutrition and other lifestyle habits. With the New Year right around the corner, don’t be just another jackass that makes a resolution to get in shape, only to give up come February. Make a change that will improve your long term health.

The sense of community definitely plays a large roll for most members of Crossfit. Most ego’s are humbled during the first WOD and that makes a great platform for personal growth. For others, like me, I like to see what the absolute limit of breaking is. I thrive on the feelings of pressure, pain and doubt and grow by overcoming them…
couldn’t agree with you more Aaron. the best platform for growth, is humbling the ego.
and one of the best ways to humble anyones ego, is a CrossFit WOD. You guys keep up the good work at the SweatShop, you all constantly motivate me, all the way on the other side of the country. SWEATSHOP EFFFN ROCKS!!
Great post! Added it to my blog.
Thanks guys!
Mark
This is a great post with the new year approaching. Being a new CF affiliate owner, I have been approached by local papers to put in some advertising into their January issues. I’ve been a bit on the fence about the whole thing. Where the best place is to spend $$ on the business.
From the looks of this, I should probably keep the online presence up to date, and be happy with my slow, continual growth.
Thanks SweatShop!!!
Looks like my heart rate after doing 50 windsprints…..
Dude…Everytime I watch you do windsprints, I think I’m watching Usain Bolt…wow!
Max,
As a small business owner, I don’t spend any $$ on print ads in newspapers. Door hangers, direct mail, etc., are best ROI. However, if I was new to crossfit and your ad was more of an article and explanation of what you are about, I think it might be useful.
I’ve had my box open 3 weeks now and work of mouth is where it’s at. Remember, the inquiries on google are driven by some sort of stimulus and chances are it’s by the wide eyed enthusiasm of a new athlete. I agree completely with Max’s post; your best investment for marketing will be the athletes you train. Advertising sucks! Make and keep your promises on the gym floor. Your athletes, your town, google, etc. will take notice.
Great data,
Tim
